   Horizontals

V13H1 : Atmospheric Science and Technology

Monsoon variability and prediction across multi-scale is a challenging problem in the Atmospheric Sciences. Over the past two decades the nation has achieved significant and commendable success in the field of weather and climate prediction across all time-scales. However there are still gray areas exist in this field especially in combining the state of the art technologies and their applications in monsoon variability and predictions. A few examples are (a) an exa-scale models for predicting weather and climate extremes and development of dynamical cores and parameterization schemes capable of using exa-scale computers, (b) representation of cloud, scale interactions, DNS and LES (c) application of AI/ML in modeling and forecast post-processing (d) physics guided data driven modeling towards Improved monsoon prediction, Terrestrial ecosystem modeling (e) Monsoon Teleconnections etc. remains elusive. The VAIBHAV summit will provide a platform for the Indian scientists to collaborate with Indian experts in the foreign institutes in the above fields.

V13H2 : Ocean Science and Technology

Ocean Sciences assumes significant place in the emerging scenario of ‘Blue Economy’ as the outcomes of R&D efforts in this field started translating into services such as forecasts and advisories of the ocean state, ocean circulation, marine ecosystem, water quality, sea level changes and other multi-hazards like tsunami, storm surge, coastal erosion, etc. These services have not only ensured the safety of life and livelihood of millions who depend on the oceans for their daily activities but also improved the socio-economic status of the coastal population and reduced the expenses of a mass evacuation of people from the entire coastal region in the event of natural hazards like Tsunami or storm surge.

India has made significant advancements in the field of oceanographic research in the recent years. Under the VAIBHAV summit, we look forward for fruitful collaborations in the following areas: (i) Studies on Marine Ecosystem, Fisheries and Marine Pollution towards Integrated Fisheries and Water quality Information System, (ii)Modeling, Observation, Evaluation and Synthesis towards Indian Ocean (iii) Prediction Multi Hazard Vulnerability and Mitigation in the coastal areas towards Impact based multi hazard warning system.

Ocean Technology plays an important role in understanding the driving factors of weather phenomena/monsoon, exploration and exploitation renewable and non renewable ocean resources, coastal protection / fore-warning from natural calamities. In recent decades ocean technology in India has contributed significantly for the sustainability of islands, coasts and oceans for the benefit of mankind apart from support to the government in strategic areas. Organizations in India had developed engineering capabilities in following major domains covering drinking water, energy, weather forecasts and coastal protection, deep sea vehicles for strategic importance with field proven solutions. The themes for potential collaboration are (i) Desalination and Ocean Renewable Energy, (ii) Underwater robotics (iii) Ocean Acoustics (iv) Coastal protection (v) ocean observation systems and (vi) Marine and Deep Sea Biotechnology

As per the recent report (Ocean Economy 2030) by Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), “Ocean holds the promise of immense resource wealth and great potential for boosting economic growth, employment and innovation. Many oceanbased industries have the potential to out-perform the growth of the global economy as a whole, both in terms of value added and employment. The projections suggest that by 2030 on a “business as usual” scenario basis, the ocean economy could be more than double its contribution to global value by reaching over USD 3 trillion”.

V13H3 : Polar Science

India’s connection with the Polar Regions dates back in 1981 when the first ship for Antarctica flagged off from Goa. Dedicated to the nation in the year 2000 as an autonomous institution under the purview of the Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India, NCPOR has enabled leading interdisciplinary research that has changed our understanding of the Earth. The themes for potential collaboration are : (i) Polar Unlock: Decoding messages stored in Ancient DNA from polar regions for the benefit of mankind, (ii) Tropical-Polar teleconnections and sea-ice modelling and .(iii) Estimation of glacier volume in Himalaya.

V13H4 : Geo Science

The Earth’s internal structure and geometry are inferred through high-resolution imaging, laboratory experiments and simulations for tightly constraining since, they are not accessible for direct observations.

Recent advances in data science, such as machine learning, have the potential to extract additional features from large datasets for better understanding the changes in earth’s properties at unprecedented spatial and temporal scales for both monitoring to imaging earth.
