V5H1 Computational Natural Sciences

Computation has emerged as an integral part of all branches of Natural Sciences. Starting from the analysis of gigantic amount of data in Physical, Biological and Environmental Sciences or in determining the structure, dynamics and reaction pathways in Chemical and Biological Sciences, to understand structures and properties of exotic materials and pathogens, large scale computation has provided crucial break through and deep insights into the workings of nature. Computational Science has now organically connected all branches of Natural Sciences breaking the traditional boundaries. Today computational approaches in Natural Sciences draws upon ideas from algorithms like Particle Swarm to identify gravitational waves and AI and ML tools to establish dynamical equations for seemingly intractable century old problems in hydrodynamics. Indian researchers worldwide have been very active in the various branches of Computational Natural Sciences and in this summit few of them have been invited to discuss potential areas of collaboration to strengthen India in the varied sub-disciplines of Computational Natural Sciences, viz., Computational Chemistry, Computational Physics, Computational Material Science, Computational Sciences and Complex systems, Computational Biology, Computational Space Sciences and Computational Earth & Environment Sciences.


V5H2 High-Performance Computing and Its Application

High-performance computing architecture is developed through a high-speed network of multiple computer servers. Therefore, High-Performance Computing (HPC), utilizing its multiple computing resources delivers a facility to solve a variety of scientific and engineering problems that could otherwise be difficult to solve using a desktop computer. In research and development, HPC allows performing concurrent jobs in parallel to speed up the computation. Under this horizontal, we wish to discuss the recent developments of HPC architectures and how efficiently these can be utilized to solve the cutting-edge computational problems. In recent times HPC has enabled development of various fields including system biology, machine learning, large scale real life model simulation studies and the application in turn has helped in optimizing the HPC architecture. In this session we would like to discuss this two-way flow and the challenges which need to be tackled thereby.


V5H3 Cyber Physical Systems

Cyber Physical Systems (CPS) are those that involve physical as well as computational elements. While sensors and actuators form the interface with physical elements, computational resources, algorithmic aspects, and networking of the devices constitute the computational elements. Forebears of Cyber Physical Systems have existed in the past in several fields like embedded systems. With a proliferation of complex technologies and applications that couple heterogeneous autonomous systems with physical and computing components, CPS has evolved into an important area of research and development in its own right. Today, CPS draws upon ideas in formal methods, control systems, algorithms, sensor networks etc Indeed, principles of CPS have found applications in diverse domains like medicine, robotics, smart grids, industry (4.0) etc. The future roadmap of research and development and the potential areas of collaboration in the area of interdisciplinary CPS will be deliberated upon during the sessions on CPS.
