V8H1: Aerospace Systems and Design

Amongst the most inherently multi-disciplinary areas of study and research in all of engineering is the subject of aerospace systems and design. The couplings involved, not only between the various sub-systems but also between the many relevant branches of science, are highly intricate, nonlinear and nonclassical in nature, thus deserving a separate and thorough investigation, rather than superposition. Vertical flight systems are a notorious example of such complex behavior, demanding an inter-disciplinary study upfront. This becomes even more critical in many of the emerging applications such as hypersonics and blended designs, which require paradigm shifts from hitherto obvious candidate solutions, embarking upon supersonic combustion and blurring or effacement of boundaries between the fuselage and the lifting surfaces, respectively. Health and usage monitoring systems stretch the limits of conventional systems approaches, accounting for diagnostics, prognostics and life extension of the flight vehicle as a whole. Economics and sociology play as critical a role as engineering itself in the case of regional transport aircraft, whose designs have unfortunately not evolved much in the last few decades. Finally, airspace management needs to incorporate strategies based on multiple considerations and constraints, borrowing from the best practices in many other fields of operation and research.


V8H2: Propulsion Technologies

Engines are integral part of Aerospace vehicles that provide the power for the flight. Flying faster ang higher requires development of more powerful and robust engines. Fifth generation aircrafts require fifth generation engines as well, which are expected to operate at much higher temperatures. However, the operations of modern aero engines are limited by the availability of materials that can withstand the pressures and temperatures that prevail inside the engine. On the other hand, environmental regulations dictate very stringent emission norms for civilian aircrafts and hence, the engines should be designed to reduce the emissions and should be environment friendly. The engine developments are driven by the requirement of higher thrust production and better fuel economy. The three sessions under Propulsion technologies will focus on the advances in air-breathing engines, development of high-temperature materials for engine applications and technologies for reduction in emissions from aero-engines as well as application of green biofuels in aviation.


V8H3: Flight Structure and Integrity

Flight Structures have seen rapid evolution in the past decade. This has been possible due to significant innovations in materials and design. Composites and metal alloys have been the domains of intense research and development, which has allowed airframe designers and certification agencies to relax the conservative constraints on structural integrity, paving the way for damage tolerant structures. The desire to improve the existing state-of-the-art has led to remarkable progresses in the understanding of impact, damage and failure through modeling and simulation as well as careful testing. The confidence in the materials, testing and design processes has led to bold new efforts to make the structure sleek, intelligent and capable of several other functionalities. The quest for better structures continues, as the definition of the flight vehicle expands to include autonomous vehicles and vtol platforms, raising new questions in terms of aeroelastic stability and reliability. The goal of this session is to address the current state and future directions of the diverse sub-domains of flight structure design and certification.


V8H4: Modeling & Simulations

Conduct of experiments for analysis and design of complex aerospace systems is often very expensive and many a times not even possible. Modeling and Simulation provide an alternate approach by utilizing mathematical models that capture the essential parameters and their behavior. This enables a cost- and time-effective procedure towards engineering analysis and design. For realistic predictions the underlying mathematical models must incorporate the complexities in the engineering systems, which often becomes available from detailed controlled experiments. The simulations of the mathematical models encompass identification of the relevant parameters and performing accurate computations that often need High Performance Computing Systems. The complexity of engineering systems arises from the non-linearities, multi-physics, uncertainties in properties, multiple scales and complex dynamics. The simulations can at best be as good as the model. This theme addresses some of the most important challenges in modeling and simulation of aerospace systems-both in terms of building and validating models and their utilization towards analysis and design via High Perfomance Computing.


V8H5: Unmanned Aerial Systems and Countermeasures

Unmanned Aerial Systems have become all-pervading in the range of applications that they have generated in almost all spheres of technology ranging from entertainment to agriculture to medical services to defence. Their potential seems to keep growing with innovations and need driving them. All this has happened in just the last one decade during which small drones used for entertainment and toy industry has expanded to occupy the utility environment of a large portion of low altitude airspace. This proliferation has given rise to many challenging tasks for designers, users, and regulatory agencies. This series of panel discussions intends to focus on the use of AI&ML to this exciting area, with applications in unmanned aerial transport, and challenges in design and manufacturing of such unmanned aerial systems based on traditional concepts as well as those borrowed from nature. Further, the reality of multiple UAVs occupying a limited airspace throws up challenges in mission management and security issues as well. Overall, we expect these panel discussions to provide a significant beginning to collaborations and cross-national involvement of researchers in this exciting area.
